Partaker of Christ

Intro:  ?

14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we keep the beginning of our commitment firm until the end,

15 while it is said,

“Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.”

“For we have become”  OR “For we are made” partakers in Christ…

Greek:  ginomai metochos

Literally “we have become sharing in/partaking”

So we partner in, we share in, we participate in Christ…

Question:  What does it mean to become a partaker of Christ?

  1. We love when hated.  Rom. 12:14  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
  2. We speak truth in love.  Eph 4:15
  3. We live sacrificially.  Luke 22:42  “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
  4. We live knowing our reward is not here, nor present, but yet coming.  Matthew 6:19-21  19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Condition: IF we keep the beginning of our commitment firm until the end.

(Are we partakers when we claim we know Christ?  When we (supposedly) surrender to Christ?)

Who is truly saved?

I John 2:6

the one who says that he remains (abide) in Him ought, himself also, walk just as He walked.

The Author of Hebrews then Returns the quotation of Pslam 95 that he began back in Hebrews 3:7

Henry:

The apostle resumes what he had quoted before from Ps. 95:7, and he applies it closely to those of that generation:

While it is said, To-day if you will hear, as if he should say,

“What was recited before from that scripture belonged not only to former ages, but to you now, and to all who shall come after you; that you take heed you fall not into the same sins, lest you fall under the same condemnation.”

Final Question:  How might you respond when someone claims the wisdom of the Scripture is outdated…that it’s too old to still be relevant wisdom?
